The Shop of Mike McGregor
is Closing
by Kevin
The Shop of Mike McGregor is officially closing.
And if you're not sure who Mike McGregor was,
it’s time to find out.
Back in the
60’s, Elvis hired Mike to work with the horses on his Circle G ranch. At the
time, Mike was a blacksmith and did custom leatherwork. They became friends and
for several years Mike and his family lived at Graceland
where he made saddles, concert belts, holsters and leather suits for Elvis.
In 1976, Mike returned home
to build his shop, and the jewelry and leather business thrived. Among the
customers and friends who enjoyed his creations were Johnny Cash, Mark Collie,
Felton Jarvis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Priscilla Presley, Jim Weatherly and,
of course, Elvis.
After Elvis’ death, Mike
opened a shop across the street from Graceland
where he sold jewelry and leatherwork to Elvis fans and tribute artists. Carole
Polk, an Elvis fan and ETA promoter, remembers visiting Mike’s shop back in
1978 and purchasing the silver and turquoise TLC pendant pictured above.
The shop relocated to Oxford, MS
and did well for many years. But after the death of Mike, and the passing of
his wife Barbara this last January, it came time to close the shop. A dear
family friend and business partner, Kim Taylor, is handling the closing of the
shop and the sale of Mike and Barbara’s personal Elvis memorabilia.
